After the Austrian GP Nico Rosberg is still leading the championship, however Lewis Hamilton is hunting him down, now only being 11 points behind. It was a close call in the last few laps with a battle taking place between the silver arrows but Hamilton took the lead and won the race giving him those vital 25 points. The battle didn’t play out well for his team mate, unfortunately Rosberg gained some damage to his front wing and finished in 4th.
Jenson Button started the race in second place on the grid and finished 6th for McLaren, his best result so far this season. It was a good run for the McLaren and showed the team had promise.
There were also celebrations at Manor, Sergio Perez crashed in the penultimate lap in his Force India meaning Pascal Wehrlein was able to finish in the last point scoring position. The 1 point he picked up is the second point the Manor have ever won, the first being picked up by Jules Bianchi back when the team was Marussia.
Lewis Hamilton: What an incredible race that was. It was incredibly tough. This track is amazing. Big thank you to all the fans for coming out, because honestly I love it here in Austria. Every time I come we have like the best hotel, the food is great and apart from this generally I really love it here. We have Toto Wolff and Niki who are also from here.
Max Verstappen: It’s an amazing day you know. To finish second with a Red Bull car at the Red Bull Ring is incredible. I enjoyed it a lot. It was an exciting race and yeah, thank you to the guys, they gave me a great car to finish second.
Kimi Raikkonen: I mean, not an easy day for us. I felt we didn’t really got what we could have. But I did the best I could. We had a good speed in the end and maybe a chance to overtake Max but then there was a yellow flag and then, fair enough, he finished in front of me and that’s how it goes sometimes. I don’t know. The car’s been feeling good all weekend and we started the race well and then suddenly I found myself in sixth position, so we tried to come back and the speed was fine and obviously for the team with Seb, he had some issue, not an easy weekend but with the speed that we had I feel that we didn’t really get what we deserved but that’s racing.
